It’s been a minute but it’s time to revisit the Decades Edition! With only two more decades to go; we’re finishing this series with our youngest alumnae sisters!

Welcome to the seventh installment of The Decades Edition for AXO Omega Alumnae. The Decades Edition is a series in which Sigma Psi Sigma, the virtual AXO Omega Alumnae Chapter, profiles alumnae from different decades. Check out these other AXO Omega Decades Editions: 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Each profile celebrates an inspirational and energizing sister. We hope these profiles inspire you to connect with an AXO Omega sister or two.

Introducing Delanie Garrett MC2015

Delanie Garrent is a Young Alum member of Sigma Psi Sigma; the virtual WSU AXO Omega Alumnae Chapter, and we’re so happy to tell her story.

Delanie was always destined to be a Coug. As all good Cougs know, school spirit is part of the WSU experience. Sister Delanie won Most School Spirit in her senior year of high school and then made her way to WSU; the most spirited university in Washington state.

Delanie embraced recruitment and was thrilled to meet the ladies at Alpha Chi Omega. AXO was home. She was enamored with the Greek family structure and loved being a Little to Carly Mills and being a Big to Savannah Laster. She loved her pledge class. She still stays close with Allison Osborne (also a Young Alum) and Rachel Rus.

Fun Fact: Delanie loved the WSU AXO experience so much that when it came time to complete her last two years of the nursing program in Spokane (2018-2019) she decided to get that nursing degree just a little later in the future. She completed her bachelor's degree in Pullman (2019) and earned a Nursing degree in Portland, OR (2021). Go Delanie!

The best memories

Delanie loves project planning and that was one of her favorite parts about the opportunities that Omega offered. She served as the VP, Facility Ops which no doubt kept her busy.

One of her favorite traditions was the Monday night chapter dinner (me too!). Wearing badge attire, all members came from near - in the house - and far - from dorms, apartments, or houses - to have dinner together. It was a chance to have solid quality time with sisters while you sat together in the dining room and enjoyed a warm meal once a week.

Another favorite memory was the holiday decorating tradition. A non-secret secret was that every year, on one night in December, the seniors would gather at a senior’s house to have a late dinner and possibly adult beverages. When it was the wee hours of the morning, the seniors would “secretly” decorate the house. This was no stealth operation. The freshman, sophomores, and juniors would hear the seniors laughing, playing the piano, and loud whispering but they stayed in their beds for they knew this was the seniors’ night. In the morning, the members woke to a house sparkling in festive holiday decor for everyone to enjoy.

The most honest and ethical profession

Frequently called the backbone of healthcare, nurses are the patient’s advocate, the direct line of care, and often the calming voice in tense environments. Nurses are genuine superheroes!

Delanie’s plan to get her nursing degree post WSU worked great and she quickly found employment as an oncology nurse in the greater Portland area. In this role, she was responsible for caring for patients with cancer. After a year in this specialization, she realized this wasn’t her calling and moved into a new specialization as a high-risk maternity nurse.

She’s been working as a high-risk maternity nurse at Providence for over three years now and loves her work. She covers everything from labor and delivery to post-partum.

Building the Dream

Delanie lives with her boyfriend and two goldendoodles in Beaverton, OR now. She and Andrew are building their own home and they have the good fortune to have a Dad who is a general contractor to help them with this ambitious project. Is it a coincidence that Delanie was VP, Facilities? I think not.

We’ll be checking Insta to see pics of the framing and roof this Spring!
